Martin Short suffered a little bit of a blunder at Selena Gomez‘s wedding to Benny Blanco.
The Only Murders in the Building star brought up the event during a recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! At first, the actor recounted the nuptials, stating, “The wedding was perfect. It was beautiful.”
However, later in the night, there was some confusion about the cake. Learn more here.
The Cake Debacle
The wedding was running smoothly at first.
In his interview, Short stated, “Everything was perfect, except, the night of the reception … it was a big, big party, imagine a stage, dance floor, musicians. … At the back of the tent were these individual seating areas with couches and chairs. So if you had a group — we had a group [of] Only Murders in the Building [cast and crew], there was about 12 of us. All of us together.”
Then came disaster for Short.
“There was a cake, a wedding cake, by our section, but it was a small wedding cake. I just assumed there was a wedding cake for each section in the back. After a few hours, they haven’t cut their wedding cake yet, Steve [Martin] said he’s gonna leave.”
Now for the best part.
“I was like, ‘Oh wait.’ Maybe I’d had a cocktail. …had a fork in my hand. I said, ‘Steve, you can’t leave yet without a piece of wedding cake!’ and I cut the wedding cake with one side, cut it the other, and then all the people in our group screamed, ‘Marty!’ It was the wedding cake,” he finished.
Trying to “Fix” It
After Short tried to fix the cake with a fork, his actions left Steve Martin “so stunned” that “he gained color.” Short turned to another guest, Paul Rudd, and commented, “So, do we just leave?”
However, there was a superhero for the star. The chef and wedding coordinator came over to help fix the cake, with the chef adding the final details.
After the “surgery” was completed, the chef jokingly said it was a “Hollywood wedding cake in that it was beautiful, but now it had a little work done.”
Selena’s Reaction
Short and Martin tried to keep the whole cake incident from the bride on her big day.
Short recalled, “I kept saying, ‘No, guys, we can’t let Selena know. And Steve said, ‘Yeah, maybe we tell her in a month or something.'”
However, the duo didn’t get far with their lie. Later in the night, when Short was leaving, Selena came over and commented, “Hey Marty, I hear you tried to eat my cake.”
Thankfully, she was all in good spirits about the mishap, adding a little bit of laughter to the event.
Martin Short’s Wedding Opinion
Despite his little escapade, Short thoroughly enjoyed Gomez and Blanco’s wedding.
“It is such a great thing to go to a wedding where you just know that these people are perfect for each other,” he explained. “You know, Selena is like an extra child of mine. I adore her so much. And she found this guy, and he’s the greatest guy, and they have the greatest hang, and they’re wildly in love.”
The pair had a simple wedding, unlike many other celebrities who “go big or go home.” All they wanted was to dance and have fun, and Short’s cake mistake was the cherry on top of a great night.
