Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie‘s adopted son, Maddox, is joining some of his siblings and dropping ‘Pitt’ from his name.
Maddox has filed a legal name change, dealing yet another blow amid Pitt’s estrangement from his family.
Filing to Remove ‘Pitt’

The actor, who was adopted by Angelina in 2002 and later by Brad in 2006, filed to legally remove “Pitt” from his surname on May 28th, according to the Daily Mail.
Instead, the 24-year-old will go by Maddox Chivan Jolie. Within the filing, he listed the reason for the surname change as “personal.”
Maddox hinted at the change all the way back in February, listing himself as “Maddox Jolie” in the credits of Angelina’s film, Couture.
Just a year prior, he was listed as “Maddox Jolie-Pitt” in the credits of 2024’s Maria.
Not the First
While Maddox may be the oldest of the Jolie-Pitt crew, he is not the first to distance themselves from Brad Pitt.
Shiloh legally removed “Pitt” from her surname after she turned 18 in 2024.
Her lawyer, Peter Levine, offered some insight into her decision, telling People that Shiloh “made an independent and significant decision following painful events.” This could possibly be referring to the alleged plane incident in 2016 that reportedly led to Jolie and Pitt’s divorce.
Sisters Zahara and Vivienne have followed suit by dropping Brad’s surname. Zahara was read out as “Zahara Marley Jolie” during her Spelman College graduation in May, while Vivienne was listed as “Vivienne Jolie” in 2024 on the playbill for The Outsiders.
The former couple’s other two sons, Pax and Knox, have yet to drop or keep “Pitt” in their surnames. However, it is reported that all of the children are estranged from Brad.
Distancing Themselves

On the outside, it seems most of the kids are distancing themselves from Brad Pitt.
The split has only grown wider since Brad and Angelina filed for divorce in 2016. It took an eight-year battle to smooth things out.
As of now, Maddox’s request has yet to be granted. However, it should only be a matter of time before a ruling comes out.
