Norwegian biathlete Sturla Holm Lægreid won his first individual Olympic medal on Tuesday, February 10. But instead of celebrating, the Norwegian Olympian shocked viewers with a cheating confession.
During the post-race interview, Lægreid confessed to cheating on his ex-girlfriend on live TV. Shocking viewers and those around him.
When asked how he felt about winning a bronze medal, Lægreid said that the accomplishment was “huge” and thanked those who helped and supported him. But quickly went into talking about the love of his life. He said he wanted to share this moment with one person, but wasn’t sure if they were watching.
“Six months ago, I met the love of my life. The world’s most beautiful, sweetest person,” Lægreid said during the interview. “And three months ago I made the biggest mistake of my life and cheated on her.”
“I’m not quite sure what I’m trying to say by saying this now, but sport has taken a back seat in recent days,” said Lægreid. “I wish I could share this with her.”
According to Norwegian newspaper VG, Lægreid’s relationship ended when he confessed. Apparently, he planned to make a public confession at one of the biggest moments of his life in an effort to ask his girlfriend to give him another chance.
In a statement with People, Lægreid has apologized for making his confession, saying that he “deeply regrets” overshadowing his bronze medal and his teammate Johan-Olva Botn’s gold medal finish “on what was a festive day for Norwegian biathlon.”
“I am not quite myself today, and I am not thinking clearly,” Lægreid admitted on Wednesday. “My apologies go to Jonah-Olav, who deserved all the attention after the gold.”
“It also goes to my ex-girlfriend, who involuntarily ended up in the media spotlight,” he continued. “I hope she is doing well.”
Lægreid concluded by saying, “I will not answer any further questions about this.”
The ex-girlfriend, who has remained anonymous, addressed the Olympian’s statement in VG, saying that it was “hard to forgive [Lægreid] even after a declaration of love in front of the whole world.”
“I did not choose to be put in this position, and it hurts to have to be in it. We have had contact, and he is aware of my opinions on this.”
