After speaking to business journalist Kara Swisher on The Goop Podcast, Gwyneth Paltrow is getting slammed over ‘tone deaf’ comments.
While speaking about wealth inequality on her luxury wellness podcast, the 53-year-old actress raised some eyebrows when she called out “super rich white guys” in Silicon Valley during a discussion on America’s tech overlords, like Mark Zuckerberg.
“How did we get here as a culture?” Paltrow asked Swisher. “Obviously, there’s so much revenue and profit driving this whole thing. That’s the heart of it.”
“But how do you think we got to this place in culture where nothing matters and now all that matters is king of these super rich white dudes who are breaking rules, setting rules, seemingly not caring as much about the downstream impact on everything, from health to culture.”
Swisher spoke that she once interviewed the CEO of Meta and walked away with the understanding that his mentality was “I am not responsible for everything downstream,” adding that society was “an idolatry of innovators and of wealth” with the belief that “if you’re wealthy, you must be smarter.”
Fan reaction has been mixed, with many slamming the actress for seeming tone-deaf about the situation, even though she’s reported to have a $200 million net worth.
One comment said, “I can appreciate the question and putting thought toward this, but also your brand is based on luxury and excessive wealth.”
Another said, “Super rich white dudes? Coming from Paltrow, that is kinda funny.” The replies under this comment were in agreement, with one saying, “She makes it seem like she is working class.”
Others have continued this bashing, saying, “This is quite ironic when both of these people are surrounded by wealth. Gwen, your brand is crazy expensive. What?”
“Gwyneth is worth 200 million, so not necessarily considered ‘the rest of us,'” another comment added, and another commented, “Ummmm, wut Gwen? Pot, meet kettle.”
Paltrow continued, saying she finds it “traumatic to be at the whim of these projections,” when she feels that they are “misaligned” with who she actually is. “My therapist talks about the evil shadow, which is part of you where rage lives – the part of you that will burn the f—- house down – and we do damage to ourselves by not embracing our shadows.”
“When you close your eyes and get into evil shadow energy, there’s a freedom there, and I’m trying to experiment with that because when I go into evil shadow energy, I don’t care what anyone’s misperception is.”
