Britney Spears has voluntarily checked herself into a rehab facility for substance abuse. The decision comes around a month after Spears was arrested on a DUI charge.
Checking into Rehab
Spears checked into a facility a few days ago in an undisclosed location in the United States.
Sources told TMZ that people close to the pop singer have been urging her to go to a facility, and she finally agreed to do so. One source even noted, “She realizes she hit rock bottom.”
Spears has struggled with drugs, specifically Adderall, and alcohol for years. She often refilled her Adderall supply during her frequent trips to Mexico.
Sources added that part of the reason Spears is in rehab now is due to her recent DUI arrest.
“She knows strategically this will look good in front of the judge — that she’s taking it seriously,” one source shared.
Both of her sons are supportive of her decision.
The program often lasts 30 days, but Spears may stay longer to gain a better recovery.
Past Health Troubles
Britney Spears has had her share of experiences with rehab facilities and psychiatric facilities. She has been to rehab several times in the past, but often bailed after a few days.
Spears was also placed under two psychiatric holds within a few weeks back in January 2008.
The first occurred when Spears locked herself in Federline’s bathroom with their son Jayden, who was just over a year old at the time.
This incident was one of several reasons why Federline was awarded sole custody of their sons.
Spears shared her experience that night in her 2023 memoir, The Woman in Me, writing she “didn’t want anyone taking [her] baby,” and was “feeling desperate to keep my own children for a few more hours.”
DUI Arrest
Spears was arrested for a DUI by the California Highway Patrol on March 5th. She was booked the following day, early in the morning, and was released shortly after. The singer must appear in court on May 4th.
After her arrest, a representative released a statement about the event.
“This was an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable. Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law and hopefully this can be the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life.”
The statement added, “Hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time.”
Hitting Rock Bottom
The DUI arrest is just a string of several setbacks for Spears. The most recent cause for concern is Spears’ social media presence after the end of her conservatorship in 2021.
Many fans have become concerned with her posts and overall well-being.
In October 2025, Federline also expressed worry for his ex-wife in his memoir, You Thought You Knew, stating it was “time to sound the alarm” on her behavior.
He wrote, “It’s become impossible to pretend everything’s OK. From where I sit, the clock is ticking, and we’re getting close to the 11th hour. Something bad is going to happen if things don’t change, and my biggest fear is that our sons will be left holding the pieces.”
