John Mulaney Says He Enjoys Helping Olivia Munn’s Family With Money

John Mulaney is enjoying the chance to financially care for his wife, Olivia Munn’s, family.

In a conversation with host Mike Birbiglia on his “Working It Out” podcast, Mulaney discussed his role in his wife’s family while delving into his ongoing “Mister Whatever” international tour.

Supporting Munn’s Family

Munn’s family immigrated to the United States from Vietnam.

During the podcast, Mulaney shared, “So Olivia has a large—she’s Vietnamese, and she has a large Vietnamese family in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, of which I am one of the significant financial contributors. For the first 39 years of my life, I supported zero Vietnamese people—probably none—and now I have 10 on the books.”

The star added a funny story about taking nine family members shopping, showing just how much happiness comes from being able to support his wife’s relatives financially. It’s a stark contrast to his relationship with his parents, who are both successful lawyers.

“With parents of some success, you can’t really do anything for them,” he explained. “And it brings me great joy to help out, to help and do fun things for Olivia’s family.”

Mulaney is able to use his money to help his loved ones, even if they’re not direct blood relatives.

No Stigma About Money Questions

Diving deeper into the money subject, Birbiglia asked if Mulaney’s financial contributions impacted the dynamic with his in-laws.

“Are you thinking that when you’re having a nice relationship with them, that in the back of their mind they’re thinking: I wonder if he’ll send me $1,000?” Birbiglia questioned.

Mulaney replied with a surprising answer: the Munn’s relatives are much more direct. “There’s no wonder. In the back of the mind? You mean the front of the voice? The front of the voice—the words coming out of their mouth?” he joked.

The Munn family openly asks Mulaney about his finances, and he finds the directness a breath of fresh air. “I tell them, they love it. They couldn’t like it more,” he said.

It just goes to highlight the cultural differences between Mulaney’s own family and Munn’s family when it comes to money. Often, those conversations are avoided completely or talked about behind closed doors.

Mulaney and Kim Munn

It’s not just a financial connection between Mulaney and the Munn family, either.

Wife Olivia opened up about the close bond with her mom, Kim Munn, and her husband, stating they were “besties” who hang out “all of the time.”

During an appearance on Today with Jenna and Friends, she shared, “John has a list—an actual notepad—of Korean dramas and movies to watch with her, and he checks them off. They love it.”

When asked what she does when Mulaney and Kim spend time together, Olivia said she lives her life and takes a bath.

As of December 2024, Kim moved in with Mulaney, Olivia, and their kids. “She’s been living with us in California,” he commented on Late Night With Seth Meyers. “I’m not sure how long that’s going to last and—or why it’s happening, really.”

Comedian and Family Man

Mulaney and Munn married in July 2024. The couple is now parents of son Malcolm, 4, and daughter Méi, 16 months. Mulaney continues to juggle his life as a family man, comedian, and family supporter, and all the intricacies that go with it.

He is continuing his “Mister Whatever” tour with upcoming dates in Seattle and Los Angeles.
