Hilary Duff Gets Candid About Painful Rift With Sister Haylie

Hilary Duff is getting candid with her current relationships with her sister, Haylie, and father, Bob, for her new album release, luck…or something.

Rift Between Sisters

Duff appeared on the latest episode of On Purpose with Jay Shetty, opening up about how she and Haylie aren’t in contact right now.

“My sister and I don’t speak. And I think in my adulthood, I’ve come across more and more people that are having this experience.”

Her experiences are reflected in the album’s track “We Don’t Talk.”

Hilary Duff added, “As painful as it feels to share, when I decided to make this record, I could only talk about the things that I’ve gone through. Like there would be no purpose to make a record after 10 years than to face, you know, what it’s been like.”

Duff continued, “I hope it’s not forever, but it’s for right now.”

“We Don’t Talk”

Along with her more recent interview, Duff talked about the song “We Don’t Talk” in a February interview for CBS Mornings.

When host Anthony Mason asked if Duff wanted her sister to listen to the track, she shared, “I don’t think that that would help. I think I have to just exist as a person on my own and do what I want to do.”

She added, “I don’t know how she’ll react to it, but it is a really personal part of my life that doesn’t get to stay personal, so I might as well say how it is for me as an experience.”

Hilary Duff’s biggest reason for getting the songs out into the world is to share her experiences, while not hurting anyone in her life.

Relationship with Her Dad

Another relationship that’s on the rocks for Hilary Duff is the one between her and her father, Bob Duff. The relationship went downhill after her parents’ 2008 divorce, and now efforts to reconnect have not been totally successful.

“My dad and I don’t really have much of a relationship and we don’t speak very often,” she said. “It’s really hard, I think, if a family breaks apart very dramatically. It’s hard to find your way back sometimes—some people want to and some people don’t.”

Beyond a broken family, Duff admits that her father has left her without “a whole bunch of answers.”

She added, “You kind of hear one side and then take from it what you believe, and you know, the same on the other. … It’s hard to find your way back sometimes. And some people want to, and some people don’t.”

Learning from Her Parents

Though her parents’ divorce ended with “a lot of fighting,” Hilary Duff didn’t want the same ending for her own family. She aimed for a more positive outcome from her divorce from Mike Comrie in 2016.

The pair share a son together, Luca. Duff has since remarried and has three kids with Matthew Koma.

“When it came for me getting divorced, I was like, ‘I’m not going to have that.’ We’re going to do holidays together as much as we can. Not that it was always easy, but it felt easier than the alternative.”
