If you’re looking to do something different with your ground beef, consider these Salisbury beef steaks. They’re simple to make and taste fantastic with mushroom gravy.

One of the best things about Salisbury steaks is that they have a familiar texture and flavor, even for picky eaters. Younger palates may even see them as a burger-in-sauce kind of dish. Plus, they go fantastically well with crowd-pleasers like mashed potatoes, fries, and even noodles.

The gravy is the star of the show here and works well with many other dishes. It pulls flavor from the ground beef, richness from the mushrooms, and the Worcestershire sauce gives it a little bite. Salisbury Beef Steaks with Mushroom Gravy Recipe Instructions

  1. Add the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon black pepper to a large bowl. Mix gently until combined.
  2. Divide the mixture into 4 oval patties, about 3/4 inch thick.
  3. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  4. Add the patties and sear for 4 minutes per side, until browned. They do not need to be fully cooked yet. Remove them to a plate.
  5. Add the chopped onion and sliced mushrooms to the same skillet. Cook for 6 minutes, stirring often, until softened and lightly browned.
  6. Add the butter. Once melted, sprinkle in the flour and stir for 1 minute.
  7. Slowly pour in the beef broth while stirring to prevent lumps.
  8. Stir in the Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, remaining 1/4 teaspoon salt, and remaining 1/4 teaspoon black pepper.
  9. Return the beef steaks to the skillet. Spoon some gravy over the top of each.
  10. Lower the heat to medium-low. Simmer for 12 minutes, until the patties are cooked through and the gravy thickens.
  11. Sprinkle with fresh parsley before serving, if using.
