Shepherd’s pie is a traditional English dish, often found in pubs and home cooking. We don’t include that step in this recipe, as you might opt for instant or frozen mash to get that part done quickly.

This recipe focuses on everything outside of the mashed potatoes. This includes cooking the beef, a condensed soup shortcut that reduces veggie prep time, and an American flex where we use Colby cheese instead of a sprinkle of English cheddar. Shepherd’s Pie Recipe Recipe Ingredients

  • 1 pound of lean ground beef
  • 1/2 cup of chopped onion
  • 1/2 cup of chopped celery
  • 1 10.5-ounce can of condensed vegetable soup
  • 1/2 teaspoon of dried thyme
  • 3 cups of prepared mashed potatoes
  • 1 cup of shredded Colby Jack or Colby cheese
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper

Shepherd’s Pie Recipe Recipe Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F and lightly coat a 2-quart baking dish with cooking spray.
  2. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add the ground beef, onion, and celery. Cook until the beef is browned and crumbly.
  3. Drain off the extra grease and stir in the condensed vegetable soup, thyme, salt, and pepper.
  4. Add the beef mixture to the baking dish.
  5. Spread the mashed potatoes evenly over the beef filling.
  6. Bake for 25 minutes and remove from the oven.
  7. Sprinkle the shredded cheese over the top and return to the oven for 5 more minutes.
  8. Let it rest for 5 minutes before serving.
