I thought that making churros at home would be a challenge. However, my concerns are put at ease the moment that first strip of golden dough hits the oil, the kitchen fills with the smell of cinnamon and sugar, and things just start to seem better as everyone starts coming to “check how it’s going.”
This recipe is simple enough for an anytime treat but with a little patience your creation will seem like something found at a carnival. The dough comes together quickly, and you don’t need any fancy kitchen tools; just a saucepan, a pastry bag, and a little patience while they fry to a perfect crisp. Once you roll them in cinnamon sugar, you’ll wonder why you never made these at home before.
For me, churros are about comfort and connection. They remind me that the best desserts aren’t about presentation… they’re about sharing. Serve them with chocolate sauce, caramel, or even a scoop of ice cream.
However you enjoy them, I hope you will find that this recipe delivers that same delight every single time!

For the dough:
- 1 cup water
- 2 ½ tablespoons granulated sugar
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 large egg
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
For frying:
- 2–3 cups vegetable oil (for deep frying)
For the cinnamon-sugar coating:
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Optional for serving:
Warm chocolate sauce or dulce de leche for dipping
Instructions
- In a medium saucepan, combine the water, butter, 1 tablespoon of sugar, and salt. Place it over medium heat and stir the mixture until the butter is melted.
- Once the butter is melted and the mixture begins to boil, remove it from the heat and stir in the flour all at once with a wooden spoon until a smooth dough forms.
- Let the dough cool for a few minutes before adding the eggs. This step is important to ensure the eggs don’t cook when mixed in.
- Add the eggs one at a time to the dough, mixing well after each addition until you have a smooth, glossy dough.
- Transfer the dough to a piping bag fitted with a large star tip.
- In a deep frying pan or heavy-bottomed pot, heat the vegetable oil to 375°F (190°C).
- Carefully pipe 6-inch lengths of dough into the hot oil, using scissors to cut the dough from the piping bag. Fry the churros, turning them occasionally, until they are golden brown and crisp, about 2-3 minutes per side.
- Remove the churros from the oil using a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
- In a shallow dish, combine the 1/2 cup sugar and cinnamon. Roll the warm churros in the cinnamon sugar mixture to coat.
- Serve the churros immediately with your favorite dipping sauce, such as chocolate, if desired.
