Comfort foods are always a favorite of mine when baking. And there are very few recipes that can beat the taste of crispy apple fritters.
This dessert might be fried, which is often looked at as a a poor healthy food choice, but once in awhile treats like warm apple fritters are a nice winter treat.
In our house, these disappear fast. Many times we have at least one or two children watching the dusting of powdered sugar. If you are looking for a crispy deep-fried pastry check out the ingredients and steps below.
Apple Fritters Ingredients
- 2 medium Granny Smith apples (peeled and diced)
- 1.5 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup whole milk
- 1 large egg
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 4 cups vegetable oil (for frying)
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar (for dusting)
Apple Fritters Instructions
- Whisk flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt in a large bowl.
- In a separate bowl, whisk milk, egg, and vanilla.
- Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and mix just until combined, small lumps are fine.
- Fold in diced apples until coated.
- Let the batter rest 5 minutes while the oil heats.
- Pour oil into a heavy pot or deep fryer and heat to 375°F (190°C). Hot oil matters.
- Drop 1.5-inch mounds into the oil using two tablespoons.
- Only fry 3 to 4 at a time, about 2 to 3 minutes per side, until golden.
- Lift out with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels for 2 minutes per side.
- Dust generously with powdered sugar using a fine mesh strainer. These fritters are best served warm.
