There’s a reason apple pie shows up regularly across tables in the U.S. It’s familiar, it’s practical, and it can be absolutely delicious.
On the East Coast, this is the bake that comes to mind whenever the air turns sharp and the grocery store bins fill up with succulent apples. All that’s left is a flaky crust and that extra special cinnamon taste.
I’ve made plenty of desserts over the years, and this one stays popular because the steps are straightforward, the ingredients are easy to find, and it’s always a low-effort bake that puts smiles on faces.
If you’re after a classic apple pie with a flaky crust, this recipe is for you.
Apple Pie Ingredients
- 2 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour
- 1 cup of unsalted butter (cold, cubed)
- 1 tsp of salt
- 1 tbsp of granulated sugar
- 6-8 tbsp of ice water
- 6-7 medium apples (peeled, cored, thinly sliced)
- 3/4 cup of granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup of brown sugar
- 1 1/2 tsp of ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp of ground nutmeg
- 1 tbsp of lemon juice
- 2 tbsp of all-purpose flour (or cornstarch)
- 1 egg (beaten, for egg wash)
- 1 tbsp of coarse sugar (optional)
Apple Pie Instructions
- Mix flour, salt, and sugar in a large bowl.
- Add the cold butter until it looks like coarse crumbs.
- Add ice water, 1 tablespoon at a time, stir until the dough holds together.
- Divide into two balls, flatten into discs, wrap each, and chill for 30 minutes.
- Toss the apple slices with lemon juice, both sugars, cinnamon, nutmeg, and flour until coated.
- Let it sit for 15 minutes so the apples start releasing their juices.
- On a floured surface, roll one disc into a 12-inch circle. Transfer it to a 9-inch pie dish, then trim the edges so you have about a 1-inch overhang.
- Spoon the apple mixture into the crust.
- Roll out the second disc and place it over the top. Crimp the edges to seal, then cut 4 to 5 slits so steam can escape.
- Brush with egg wash and sprinkle coarse sugar if you’re using it.
- Heat the oven to 375°F.
- Set the pie on a baking sheet to catch any drips.
- Bake for 45 to 50 minutes, until the crust is golden and the filling is bubbling.
- Let it cool for 2 hours before slicing.
