If you’re looking for home cooked comfort food, look no further. This American-style goulash hits the mark.

It’s packed with ground beef, elbow macaroni, and a rich tomato sauce that tastes like it’s been simmering for hours. It’s simply delicious.

In my house, this is the kind of dinner that disappears fast when served up. Especially on nights when everyone’s schedule is a little off and people are eating in front of the TV.

If the idea of a hearty American take on goulash appeals to you, check out the recipe below.

American Goulash Ingredients

  • 1 lb of ground beef
  • 2 cups of elbow macaroni (uncooked)
  • 1 medium onion (diced)
  • 2 cloves of garlic (minced)
  • 1 bell pepper (diced)
  • 1 (14.5 oz) can of diced tomatoes
  • 1 (15 oz) can of tomato sauce
  • 1 cup of beef broth
  • 1 tbsp of paprika
  • 1 tsp of dried oregano
  • 1 tsp of salt
  • 1/2 tsp of black pepper
  • 1 tbsp of olive oil
  • Shredded cheddar cheese (for garnish)

American Goulash Instructions

  1. Get everything prepped first, onion and pepper diced, garlic minced, spices measured, cans opened.
  2. Boil a large pot of salted water.
  3. Cook the macaroni until al dente, about 10 minutes, then drain and set aside. If you’re not mixing it in right away, always rinse the pasta with cold water to keep it from sticking.
  4. Add olive oil in a large skillet or Dutch Oven over medium heat.
  5. Add the ground beef and brown it, breaking it up as it cooks over 10 minutes.
  6. Drain off any excess fat from the ground beef.
  7. Add the onion, garlic, and bell pepper. Cook for 5 minutes, just until the vegetables soften.
  8. Sprinkle in the paprika, oregano, salt, and pepper.
  9. Stir for 1 minute so the spices toast a bit.
  10. Pour in the diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, and beef broth.
  11. Bring to a gentle simmer, then lower the heat, cover, and cook for 15 minutes so the flavors come together.
  12. Add the cooked macaroni and stir well.
  13. Let it simmer uncovered for 3 minutes, then taste and adjust seasoning if needed.
  14. Spoon into bowls and top with shredded cheddar.
  15. Let it sit a minute before serving hot.
