7 Costco Dorm Essentials You Didn’t Know You Needed

With graduation right around the corner, it is time to start thinking about what to buy for college. Knowing what is needed for a dorm room can be a struggle, especially when you run into unexpected situations. The basics–such as a mattress topper and shower shoes–are important, but so are the things you wouldn’t normally think of. Here are 7 Costco dorm essentials you didn’t know you needed.

7. Collapsible Laundry Caddy

While the laundry bags are great, they leave your clothes wrinkled. Laundry baskets keep your clothes in good shape, but they take up a lot of space and are difficult to carry. This collapsible laundry caddy allows your laundry to be easily carried on your shoulder, it keeps clothes free from wrinkles, and it can double as a hamper for everyday use. If you don’t need the hamper option, collapsing it allows for easy storage, taking up almost no space.

6. Clothes Steamer

While some dorms may have a communal ironing board, many do not. Even if you do, there is no guarantee that it will be free to use when you’re rushing to get the wrinkles out before a presentation. This portable clothes steamer is simple to use, small, and effective. It is the best way to tackle wrinkles in the dorm quickly and efficiently.

5. Garbage Can

This one may sound confusing because your college likely told you they would be providing a garbage can. Though this is true, the garbage can is almost always too small. Your dorm isn’t just your bedroom; it is your primary living space. You have food packages, paper towels from cleaning, tissues, and more to throw away. Upgrading to a larger trash can is a great way to reduce trips to the dumpster and reduce food smells if the can has a lid.

4. Water Boiler

Not all food and drinks will be eaten in the dining hall. A breakfast or a late-night snack or drink might be made in your dorm, especially if you have limited meal swipes or if you get sick. A water boiler is great for morning oatmeal, soup, and tea.

3. Waterproof Boots

Even if your class is canceled because of the snow, or you plan to stay in on a rainy weekend, a good pair of waterproof boots is essential. You still have to walk to places like the dining hall, library, or the gym. Keeping your feet dry will make your day much more comfortable, and keep your other shoes dry for class the next day.

2. Sunscreen

As a college student, you will be walking everywhere. Even going to your preferred dining hall or going to class may require a 10-minute walk. In addition, if your campus has a nice walking trail, it may become a tradition to call family and friends from home while you walk. Even if you aren’t walking, you may find a new study spot outside or attend outdoor university events. Wearing sunscreen protects you from sunburn, which is especially important when you have backpack straps on all the time.

1. Water Bottles

Many college students show up to campus with a water filter, but it is also important to have water bottles at the ready. Whether you need a late-night sip of water or you’re in a rush to get to class, having water available at all times is a must, especially when your Brita is empty. Keep a case under your bed and refill your fridge when you’ve drunk all your cold ones.
