Dolly Parton Gets Children’s Hospital Named After Her in Tennessee

East Tennessee Children’s Hospital is officially getting a new name. It will now be known as the Dolly Parton Children’s Hospital, through a partnership with the country music singer.

This is just another feather in Parton’s cap as she continues to support healthcare.

Parton Supporting Healthcare

In a video on ETCH’s website, Parton explained her reasons for supporting healthcare. When she was younger, she was surrounded by people who believed in love, faith, music, and taking care of each other.

She especially loves that ETCH “see children not just as patients but as precious lives each with a story and a future.”

She added, “Ever since I’ve been in a position to do my part to help others, I have tried to do just that, especially when children and families need it most. I’ve always believed that every child deserves a fair chance to grow up healthy, hopeful, and surrounded with love.”

The surprise announcement arrived on February 26th from Parton and the hospital. The nonprofit health care system provides for kids and families in the region, regardless of race, religion, or ability to pay.

In the video, Parton explained, “When the idea first came up about the hospital carrying my name, well I said yes because I believe in you. I believe in this place, and I want to do my part to help.”

She continued, “So, if putting my name alongside yours helps bring more comfort, more hope, and more healing to children and families, well, that’s exactly where it belongs. Now, my name comes with my heart, comes with my support and it comes with my promise to help however I can.”

“More Than a Name Change”

The Dolly Parton Children’s Hospital has almost 20 locations in East Tennessee.

When talking about the name switch, Matt Schaefer, president and CEO of the hospital, said, “This is more than a name change.” He added, “With Dolly’s support, we are strengthening our mission to deliver world-class pediatric care to families, ensuring every child who walks through our doors receives the treatment they deserve.”

Knox County Mayor Glenn Jacobs also shared his thoughts: “Before I was mayor, I served on the hospital’s advisory council and made regular visits to see the children there. My own grandchildren have received care at the hospital, so I have seen the great work that goes on there firsthand.”

He added, “This collaboration with Dolly is transformational for one of the most important institutions in our region. Speaking of Dolly, I cannot imagine what East Tennessee would look like without her and her generosity. As I always say, some superheroes wear sequins.”

Parton’s Response

Parton connected her past to her present, noting how growing up in East Tennessee instilled in her a duty to take care of others, such as families and children.

“You’ve been taking care of children, not just as patients, but as precious little lives, each one with their own story and a future. You do this work with compassion, with courage and with love, and I can’t tell you how much I admire that,” Parton shared.

“I truly am honored to be part of this next chapter with you. And I can’t wait to see all the good things we’re going to be doing together,” Parton added.
