Cindy Crawford and Richard Gere have been on thin ice since they divorced 30 years ago, but a new common ground is prompting the ice to thaw.
Thawing the Relationship
While their past may be tumultuous, the estranged exes are trying to put that behind them as their children, Kaia Gerber and Homer Gere, are starring in Ryan Murphy’s upcoming miniseries The Shards.
“Cindy and Richard have kept their distance from one another over the last few decades,” a source told the Globe. “He’s a proud guy who has zero interest in relitigating the past and [she] can be pretty tough in her own right. But they’re dropping their defenses and playing nice and they’re doing it for the kids.”
The collaboration between a new generation seems to be knitting the two families together as they show their support.
Crawford and Gere’s Past

After 30 years, the contact is quite shocking, especially after their divorce.
However, their story started in the 90s, when Crawford and Gere were seen as one of the “It couples.” They eloped to Las Vegas in 1991 and spent four years married to each other before calling it quits in 1995.
In years since then, Crawford said their 17-year age gap had played a part in the divorce, along with the fact that they weren’t really “friends” and Gere felt “like a stranger” to Crawford.
Even though the divorce left the two estranged from each other, it never devolved into cruel remarks. The Globe’s source went on to say that “to their credit, they have never descended into badmouthing each other.”
One prominent example of that is Crawford’s 2015 memoir Becoming, in which she didn’t include her relationship with Gere.
“It’s not something I want to share,” she explained in an interview with People. “If I felt that there was a great good that could come of it, I might have shared more, but I didn’t think that there was anything for other people to learn or benefit from. And I wanted to be respectful.”
Building New Lives Apart
While the bond between them stayed frozen over, the pair remarried and built separate lives, including having their own children.
Cindy Crawford has been married to husband Rande Gerber for 28 years, sharing children Kaia and Presley.
Richard Gere’s second marriage to Carey Lowell produced son Homer, while his current wife Alejandra Silva and he share sons Alexander and James.
“They certainly have not been quote-unquote friends, not at all, in the time since they split up,” says the source. “But their children, Kaia and Homer, have formed a real bond while filming their Ryan Murphy miniseries The Shards and that has created a thaw in Richard and Cindy’s chilly relationship.”
All in all, “this project is important to both families and it comes at a pivotal time in both Kaia and Homer’s careers,” adds the source.
“No matter what happens, you have to put aside old beef and … cheer on the younger generation.”
