If you aren’t giving your scalp consistent TLC, then we regret to inform you that you’re doing haircare all wrong. Tending to your scalp is arguably just as important as caring for your strands, and can lend to a healthier head of hair altogether. The concept of scalp care has gained momentum over the last few years, and some are even partaking in routine scalp facials.

What is a Scalp Facial?

You’re probably aware of a traditional facial, which usually involves cleansing, then an active treatment via exfoliating or soothing ingredients, followed by hydration. Scalp facials are similar.

“A scalp facial is a multistep treatment that deeply cleanses and removes excess impurities, oil, and product build-up from the scalp and hair follicle while repairing and supporting scalp tissue,” explains Anthony Haffar, a veteran hairstylist at Sunstone Spa in the Greater Palm Springs area.

The scalp facial can be tailored according to your needs. So if you have issues with an oily scalp, then a clarifying and oil-zapping treatment can help. If you’re battling itchiness, then a calming or soothing treatment would be beneficial.

Why Scalp Facials Shouldn’t Be Overlooked

Our scalp is often neglected since it is covered up with hair, but proper care addresses issues such as dandruff or flaking, itchiness and sensitivity, oily scalp, dry scalp, and scalp acne. Plus, it feels dang good and your hair will look better for it.

“If hair follicles are being obstructed by build-up from dead skin cells, dirt, and pollution, hair growth is disrupted and the hair cannot thrive. The skin and hair will react over time with signs by thinning and falling out, rash, dandruff, itchy as well as becoming dull and oily over time,” says Haffar.

Basically, caring for your scalp supports healthy hair at the source. Your scalp is a complex part of your skin and is subject to damage and stress just like the rest of your body.

How Often Should You Do Scalp Facials?

Your stylist can do a professional scalp facial at your cut and color appointments, but Haffar notes you can opt for a monthly treatment, as well. (Bonus: You get a blowout and scalp massage out of it, too.) It’s also a good idea to maintain a healthy scalp in between appointments with products formulated specifically for scalp care.
