It was primarily a two-seater car designed to compete with the small European sports car. The operating model was then donated to the Henry Ford Museum in Michigan in 1982.

The demand was so high throughout the next few years that several assembly plants all across California, San Jose, New Jersey, Dearborn, and Metuchen worked on building the Mustang.
