Everyone knows I love discovering new wines…and new grapes …and new stories.
So I went back to Zachys wine shop in Scarsdale, NY, to do just that. I met up with Andrew McMurray, VP at Zachys, to do a post-game wrap up of the Great Wines of Italy event that they hosted with JamesSuckling.com. We wanted to talk about the under-the-radar wines that were at the event that night that knocked our socks off.
And because there really is a God, there was a counter full of wines waiting for me when I got to the store. So listen below, as we tasted through them and Andrew told all their back stories. Fun stuff.
These are the wines we tasted:
Marchesi Antinori Umbria Cervaro della Sala 2013
Bellavista Franciacorta Alma Cuvée Brut NV
Cusumano Sicilia Tenuta San Giacomo Sàgana 2012
Pietranera Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2010
Ciacci Piccolomini d’Aragona Rosso di Montalcino 2013
Il Borro Sangiovese Toscana Polissena 2011
Bibi Graetz Toscana Soffocone di Vincigliata 2012
Oh, and in the podcast we make reference to a wine with a provocative label. Check it out and I don’t think I will need to say much more.
And I wanted to shout out to the Pietranera Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2010. It’s not often you come across a 2010 Brunello Riserva — which you know by now are all off-the-hook amazing — for $70. They usually start at $120. Just saying.
So let me know if you try any of these — I bet you will find a new favorite.
