Like so many trends from the Y2K era, mule shoes have officially made a mighty comeback for spring and summer 2022. If you’re unfamiliar with this classic silhouette, the mule features a backless heel section for easy wearing, and can come with or without a heel or open toe.
“The mule got its name from the Latin term mulleus calceus, meaning mullet shoe. It was used to refer to both backless shoes and slippers as early as the Middle Ages,” explains personal stylist Kimberly Mayhew, founder of House of Colour. Similar to the mullet haircut (which is also trending right now), it features the more formal stuff in the front and a naked party in the back.
The thing about mules is that they feel effortless and casual, but still have an air of “put together.” They’re also super versatile and can be worn with jeans, slacks, dresses, jumpsuits, and skirts. Basically, there’s a comfy, casual-chic mule for every mood and moment.
